The 2nd semester of 2nd year saw us move away from Social Network Sites and instead focus on a, personally, much more interesting module which focussed on designing and prototyping screen-based products suitable for the year 2024. Like the last module, our concept had to be based on gathered insights. Rather than using a research similar to the last module, we instead focussed on observational skills. This involved actually going out in to the field and gathering our insights through people watching essentially, and watching how they reacted to the environment we would be prototyping in. For this module, we are asked to create screen based prototypes that would be found in the Dundee City Square which had been recently refurbished to incorporate screens on every surface.
In groups of two, we went out to the square and began observing how people interacted with the square. What we found was that the square itself was used very infrequently - the square was positioned right beside the high street of Dundee and so while people were walking past the square, people were not actually walking through the square itself. Another problem we found with the square itself was that the area was vast and sparsely decorated, creating quite an intimidating space to be in if you were on your own. The main attraction to the square seemed to be a coffee shop positioned in a building half way up the edge of the square which managed to bring in people to the square. The numbers were still small however.
Despite being a hard area to work with, my parter and I managed to find a number of insights that would help us create concepts that would benefit the square and thus concluded our first week with this project.
